OTIS COLLEGE

2016 Feb 16 - 2:15pm - 2016 Feb 17 - 12:45am

I will be giving a number of talks at OTIS in one day in good old Los Angeles.

The main talk (see OTIS website for details) will happen at @ 11:00 am in THE FORUM, 9045 Lincoln Blvd, Los Angeles. This will beopen to the public and free. This talk will be  a survey of my work in the context of Climate Change and the Anthropocene with an emphasis on the strategy of 'botanical intervention.' Also, I'm trying to get people interested in the complexities of the Anthropocenic landscape and will discuss the biodiversity and geomorphology of industrial wastelands and the significance of these landscapes as sites of regeneration and as internalized territiories of our optical subconscious.

That same evening, I will be presenting a modified version of the above at Elektra Grant's Human Ecologies class which meets from 7-945p in the Ahmanson Bldg, room 309.

Nature 2.0: Post Industrial Ecologies of the Hudson River Estuary

2017 May 14 - 1:00pm - 5:00pm

N.B! This has been rescheduled to May 14th from the original April 22nd date due to a family emergency.

So sorry for any inconvenience.

I'm giving a workshop on postindustrial ecologies at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY.

Please check the Sanctuary website for the exact times.

Here is the blurb describing what is supposed to happen:

Stretching from Troy to the New York harbor, the Hudson River’s estuary has played an integral part in the rise and fall of America as a vast industrial power. Its waters and surrounding landscapes have been heavily impacted since the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution and there are troubling legacies of persistent pollutants such as the the PCBs left behind by the General Electric manufacturing plant at Hudson Falls. Yet there are signs of regeneration, if one knows where to look. Abandoned factory landscapes called brownfields harbour surprising biodiversity as the man-made habitats they contain mimic prairies and savannahs, cliffs and gravel banks. The post-industrial flora and fauna that thrives in these disturbed sites comprises a ‘hyper-ecology’  - a  fascinating mix of natives and exotics, pioneer species, habitat opportunists and a range of other organisms that benefit from conditions that are significantly hotter, more alkaline and less fertile than the primeval ecosystem so long ago obliterated. With the decline in industrial activity and the enforcement of laws governing the discharge of pollutants, aquatic ecosystems too are showing signs of recovery, despite significant challenges. Who would have thought even a few decades ago that humpback whales could once again be seen feeding in the East River just off Gracie Mansion?

In his talk and workshop, ecological artist, writer and activist Oliver Kellhammer will frame post-industrial ecologies as sites of renewal and the emergence of novel processes. In collaboration with artist Kathy High, he has been compiling a field guide to the biodiversity of the brownfields of Troy and has been experimenting with strategies for bioremediating contaminated soils in the area using a combination of fungi and plants.

Ruderal Ecology: Grounds for Change Conference

2018 Apr 13 - 10:00pm - 2018 Apr 15 - 5:00pm

This will be so much fun! The venue is the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, New York! I'll be co-leading (with the amazing Azuré Keahi) a biomapping, bio-inventory walk to catalog some of the biodiversity in the postindustrial lands in North Troy.

Ruderal Ecologies is a weekend-long symposium to commence Earth Week. Art, urban ecology, and social justice activities focus on living in urban environments shaped by stress. “Ruderal ecologies” are formed by hardy and adaptive organisms and grassroots activist communities that grow out of the ruins of urban wastelands.

Hosted by The Sanctuary for Independent Media’s NATURE Lab, the symposium involves thinkers and activists from ecology, public health, urban planning, environmental science, environmental justice, permaculture, the arts, and science and technology studies. Together participants look for growth and resilience in polluted but biodiverse environments, asking:
    • How can we identify underserved marginalized communities to build engaged, diverse networks, on grounds considered “wastelands”?
    • What forms of life flourish amid the ruins of ruderal ecologies?
    • What happens when we include “nonhuman” forms of life–including plants and animals–in our thinking about human flourishing?

Life at the Edges at Science Gallery Dublin

2018 Jun 22 - 12:00pm - 2018 Sep 30 - 8:00pm

Some of my worm-eaten 'Philosopher's Stones' will be appearing at the Science Gallery in Dublin in an arrangement entitled 'Plastivore.'

Here is the description of the exhibition:

How do things survive in outer space, on the bottom of the ocean or inside volcanoes? Why do extreme environments excite our imagination and our drive to explore? How do inhospitable environs inspire new technologies, designs and methods?

From terraforming planets to tracking microbes on geothermal vents, this exhibition will explore LIFE AT THE EDGES. Who are the scientists and designers preparing for a future of frontier living and what might we find living in the most unexpected places like lava tubes, Antarctic mountaintops, or Martian permafrost? Will humans ever inhabit the moons of Saturn or the deep sea, or have we already contaminated the last frontiers with space junk, plastic gyres and invasive species?

Grafters X Change:

2019 Mar 29 - 11:00pm - 2019 Mar 31 - 9:00pm

Grafters X Change: Branches and Networks

Grafters X Change: is an interdisciplinary event that brings together a range of artists, ecologists, fruit tree enthusiasts, and technologists from the New York region to exchange branches and seeds, conduct workshops, and offer demonstrations. Ecological artists, social practice artists, digital artists, academics from related fields, students, sustainability advocates, regional tree growers, and agroforesters offer complimentary resources and workshops that deepen creative resiliency. Participants learn about ecological art practices and acquire ecological art skills, along with local tree knowledge, propagation resources, propagation techniques, and distributed network technologies, which in turn advance local knowledge and regional sustainability.

Grafters X Change: Branches and Networks is a two-day event on March 29th and 30th 2019. allows eco-artists throughout Central New York to converge and to share ecological art-making resources (primarily scionwood and seeds), skills, fruit foods, and art projects in a collaborative, DIY, and interdisciplinary setting. This event includes workshops and demonstrations from bioregional agriculturists and technologists and is meant to be an example of how 21st-century arts practice can intervene in interrelated conversations about local resiliency, the anthropocene, and climate change.

Grafters X Change manifests as

- scion branch and seed exchange for eco-artists and agriculturalists

- hands-on demonstrations and workshops

- roundtable discussions

- walking tours

- tabloid publication

- a 'living lab’ as pedagogical tool across Colgate curricula.
